CHILDREN in Reading will take part in workshops on the sustainable disposal of food packaging as part of a study by the University of Reading.

From Monday, November 14, a team of researchers will work with primary schools in the municipality to find out what children in key stage 2, aged 7 to 11, already know and to teach them to recognize different types of packaging and recycling. properly.

The first workshop will allow students to familiarize themselves with the different types of food containers and packaging and the appropriate and inappropriate ways to recycle them.

They will receive a food and drink bag containing items such as bottled water, a cheese snack, crackers and a carton of orange juice with a straw.

Every day, for a week, each child will be invited to choose an item to open and consume if they wish. He will then note the packaging concerned and the way in which it was disposed of.

Following the week of journal entries, children will participate in a second workshop where researchers will assess how much their knowledge has improved.

Dr Lignou added: โ€œChildren are the future. They need to be equipped to live in a changing world where sustainable packaging disposal will become increasingly important as natural resources dwindle.

“We also know that children can be good at nagging their parents to do better, so we expect the impacts to go far beyond those who attend the workshops.”

Borealis and the Vibac group have designed a new film based on BOPP for food packaging, supposed to facilitate sorting in PP recycling channels.

The ‘V-Fresh’ film is produced with a grade from Vibac’s Bonewables portfolio, which consists of ‘circular polyolefins wholly derived from waste streams and residues’. These grades claim to provide the same performance properties as virgin PP while reducing its carbon footprint.

The new packaging is meant to be compatible with mechanical recycling, where it is meant to be “easily sorted” into PP waste streams, and with existing converting machines. It is hoped that by using BOPP, the film will be cost and resource efficient, and extend the shelf life of the food products it contains.

Food packaging specialist PFF Group has invested a ยฃ16,000 Clean Air Zone grant in a new delivery wagon as part of the company’s drive to reduce carbon emissions.

The grant was awarded as part of Bradford Council’s ยฃ6.4million Clean Air HGV Fund scheme to help HGV operators adapt to the UK District’s new Clean Air Zone.

The funding enabled companies to replace or upgrade their vehicles to reduce harmful emissions for around 400 heavy goods vehicles.

The PFF Group used their ยฃ16,000 grant as a down payment on a new 18t diesel DAF curtain wagon, replacing an older vehicle. The new wagon will be used to make deliveries from the PFF factory in Keighley to customers in the Bradford area.

Lee Wilkinson, group supply chain director at PFF, said: โ€œWe are committed to being as carbon efficient as possible in all of our operations. The new vehicle meets the Euro 6 emissions standard as it is a larger and more fuel efficient wagon, which means we can make fewer journeys and reduce our carbon footprint.

Earlier this year, PFF invested ยฃ200,000 in new transformer technology that reduces carbon emissions at its Keighley site.

The new voltage management technology will reduce PFF’s energy costs and increase site efficiency, resulting in a 5% reduction in the company’s carbon footprint.

The family-owned PFF Group is one of the UK’s largest independent food packaging manufacturers, supplying supermarkets, multinational food manufacturers, foodservice and fresh produce businesses across the country.

PFF employs over 250 people in total at its Keighley headquarters and Sedgefield site. The company is a member of Made in Britain, an initiative that champions manufacturing in the UK.
