Ink manufacturers on the safety and sustainability of food packaging inks

At the virtual International Conference on Advances and Challenges in the Food Packaging Industry, hosted by the PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry on March 23-24, some of the world’s leading ink manufacturers spoke their approach to sustainability. Hubergroup’s Lars Hancke spoke about his company’s Cradle to Cradle Certified status. Cradle to Cradle Certified is an exclusively licensed certification mark of the Cradle to Cradle Products Innovation Institute.

“We started our journey by getting Cradle to Cradle certification. From our perspective, this is the most comprehensive certification of sustainability performance. Why? Because it combines the sustainability of the products with a sustainable and responsible behavior of the company as a whole. Whereas other certifications are more product oriented,” Hancke said.
Hubergroup has developed a wide range of products which have been tested and approved according to Cradle to Cradle standards.

In order to obtain this certification, the independent environmental institute EPEA assessed the ink manufacturing process with regard to the company’s eco-management relating to the responsible management of energy and water resources, and the alignment of Hubergroup on corporate social responsibility. Last fall, the company received full certification for its Gecko solvent-based inks and Hydro-X water-based inks. For its offset inks, Hubergroup has obtained certification for its Indian sites. The company is now ready to roll out certified solvent-based inks also in India, he said.

Siegwerk’s transparency label In his presentation, Jorg Peter Langhammer from Siegwerk said that transparency is the key to ensuring the safety of packaging. With the launch of its Transparency Label, the company reinforces its responsibility for ink safety and regulatory issues globally. Above all, the label reflects its commitment
to full proactive transparency and shared responsibility throughout the packaging supply chain.
This includes not only manufacturing safe inks under GMP and based on carefully assessed raw materials, but also providing all information and documentation to customers and business partners in order to print a safe and compliant product.

Speaking about the company’s approach to sustainability in India, Langhammer said Siegwerk has decided to phase out toluene in India for food packaging inks. The company has also launched mineral-free inks in India. The inks supplied by Siegwerk from its Bhiwadi plant in Rajasthan do not contain mineral oils as an intentionally added substance, which comprises two fractions – mineral oil saturated hydrocarbons (MOSH) and mineral oil aromatic hydrocarbons ( MOAH).
