Italian Fontaneto launches compostable pasta packaging

Italian artisan producer of fresh pasta Pastificio Fontaneto will serve its products in new, fully compostable and recyclable packaging.

The packaging was designed by Novamont, Gualapack, Ilip and Gruppo Poligrafico Tiberino – a group of companies from the green chemistry and plastics industries.

The project plans to replace traditional plastic/multilayer packaging with certified industrially compostable packaging, consisting of a thermoformed tray, a heat-sealed film and a compostable label.

The end result is the first pack of 100% compostable and biodegradable fresh pasta – TÜV certified and made from Mater-Bi, a material with a high content of renewable raw materials.

The packaging consists of a Mater-Bi bioplastic tray (produced by Novamont and Ilip), a multilayer film containing Mater-Bi (Gualapack) and a compostable label (Gruppo Poligrafico Tiberino).

Sustainable packaging

The new packaging will contribute to the production of compost and help reduce CO2 emissions, once placed in the separate collection of kitchen waste.

The first products with the new packaging are Pastificio Fontaneto’s Ravioli del Plin and Piedmont Agnolotti, sold in local stores, large-scale distribution centers, delicatessens and foreign markets.

The introduction of recyclable packaging responds to a demand from the large-scale retail trade, which is looking for a greater commitment to sustainability and the green agenda of its suppliers.

Recyclable packaging represents a concrete step towards the elimination of plastic trays, replacing them with a container that can be recycled with the collection of wet waste.
