Leonardo ~ PZL-Świdnik has won an PLN 8.25 billion contract to supply 32 AW149 multirole helicopters to the Polish Armed Forces.


Press release, 01 July 2022: PZL-Świdnik, the Polish company wholly owned by Leonardo, has won a contract from the Polish Ministry of Defense (MoD) worth PLN 8.25 billion gross (about 1.76 billion euros) for the supply of 32 AW149 multirole helicopters. The contract was announced today at an official ceremony held today at the premises of PZL-Świdnik, in the presence of representatives of the Polish government.

Additionally, the contract includes logistics, training and simulator packages. The logistics package includes a stock of spare parts and consumables, as well as equipment for the ground handling of helicopters. The training and simulator package includes comprehensive training of pilots and technical personnel and the delivery of a set of advanced simulators and training equipment. The new helicopters will carry out troop transport and air support missions. Equipping the helicopters will also allow them to be used for casualty evacuation, search and rescue in combat operations, and for transporting cargo and supplies. The configuration of the helicopters, fully meeting the requirements of the Polish Armed Forces, will also include, among others, observation systems, small arms, rockets and guided/unguided missiles and self-defense systems. The armament, depending on the variant and the configuration of the helicopter, can be installed in the cabin or on the external hardpoints of the helicopter. Helicopter deliveries will take place over the 2023-2029 period.

Acting as prime contractor, PZL-Świdnik will host a local production line for these new helicopters. Leonardo will therefore undertake new investments in its Polish factory in addition to the approximately 1 billion euros already invested since 2010, which has considerably strengthened the competitiveness and industrial capacities of PZL-Świdnik. This makes an important contribution to the Polish aerospace and defense industry, which will enable domestic production, establishment of a logistics base and in-depth technical support for the Polish Ministry of Defense’s AW149s, in accordance with the commitment of Leonardo and PZL-Świdnik to bring industrial benefits to Poland. .

The AW149, already in service with international operators for a range of applications and under evaluation in many countries, is ideally suited to modernize defense helicopter fleets and replace a range of aging types in the middleweight category. The AW149 is a latest generation multirole military helicopter designed from the outset to meet the most demanding needs of the armed forces. The platform can be reconfigured to perform a wide variety of demanding tasks under the toughest operational conditions. The AW149’s advanced equipment, weapons and system technologies, combined with its high agility, range/endurance and power margins, the highest levels of safety and survivability, provide users with the defense high operational readiness, mission effectiveness and fleet profitability.
